The Chapel Royal has existed since 1537 as a body of priests and singers who serve the spiritual needs of the Sovereign. It has often been called 'the cradle of English church music' for its members have included Thomas Tallis, William Byrd, Thomas Morley, Henry Purcall, Pelham Humphrey and John Blow.

A permanent choir was established in 1868. Today the men and boys, who are drawn from various local schools, sing the two Sunday services, record, tour and take part in concerts, such as the BBC Proms. There is a Choral Scholarship, at 11+, and an Organ Scolarship awarded annually.
