YEVGENY SUDBIN
Tuesday, 22 April 2008 at 7.45pm
Over the years the Richmond Concert Society has gained quite a reputation for what could be termed ‘talent-spotting’ especially as regards pianists. In a period when there are so many brilliant pianists we believe that the name Yevgeny Sudbin stands out.
He was born in St Petersburg in 1980 where he studied at the Conservatorium with Lubov Pevsner between 1987 and 1990. Between 1991 and 1996 he studied at the Hochschule Hanna Eisler in Berlin with Galina Iwanzowa. In the 1990’s he started winning numerous competitions and whilst he was at the Purcell School of Music won the Alfred Brendel Prize. He released his first CD of 18 sonatas by Scarlatti to huge critical acclaim and started to receive major press coverage. He followed his Scarlatti recording with a CD devoted to the music of Rachmaninov, again to the same acclaim that greeted his first CD. Signing a 5 year contract with the recording company BIS, Yevgeny followed his success with a recording of the famous first piano concerto of Tchaikovsky and the Medtner first piano concerto. Many critics were astounded by his performance of the Tchaikovsky concerto because it is so well known and recorded more times than any other piece but again Sudbin was able to bring to this work a new intellectual approach. Once again the critics cheered. So it is with great pleasure that we bring to Richmond a young pianist whom many regard as potentially one of the most exciting pianists of the past decade with a fruitful international career ahead of him.
